A Fortunate Time

Last Friday's cookie fortune said something about finding out how fortunate we were. Considering what had happened a couple of days before I discarded it thinking it was un-blogworthy. Yet, in hindsight (and isn't that always the case), we were fortunate.

After a day at work distracted by thoughts of what to do and who to call, I decided to check our insurance policy and found out that we were covered. I remember insurance policies used to be very specific about damage from water; you were covered if the water was falling from the sky but not after the water had hit the ground. We're still not covered for floods but this unusual event was covered under storms.

Our insurance company have been great! I rang them up for advice and they arranged to have people come out to assess the damage and help with the clean up. So we have been very fortunate with the support we've had from our insurance company, and from Dad who dismantled the wardrobe that we couldn't figure out how to dismantle.

At Saturday's yoga class I learnt how lucky we had been. A few blocks from us the street was flooded and one of the ladies said her garage had been underwater. Soggy carpet is better than water in the garage! Our local newspaper has posted photos of the flooding in our area and it's amazing to see areas like Eastwood with thigh-deep water.

And here's some of photos of our own disaster area:

It's hard to believe that this is my yoga practice area. The bookcase is fine but the computer desk, being chipboard, needs to be thrown out.

  • Main bedroom

I was concerned about the camphor wood chest but one of the guys told Tony it was fine because it was made from "old-fashioned wood". Our bed and mattress did not fare as well. Considering the number of books we had on the floor, only one book was badly damaged and it's still legible after drying.

  • Outside

Look closely and you might see a faint brown line, which is the high tide mark on the sliding door into our parents retreat.

It's a little easier to see on our bedroom window.

It looks like we had water to a depth of about 30cm outside both rooms!

At least for now everything is dry and, if water gets in again, everything left should survive the soaking.
